Freehand MX on Windows 7 64 bit

Postby raneels » Sun Aug 05, 2012 3:58 pm

Hi guys, I was having a problem with OS 10.6 - as Adobe removed the print to PDF on CS5.

So I'm still using a PC with FH MX - no issues, but now my company is currently doing a roll out and changing all machines (PC) from XP to Win 7 64bit - and now I can't use Adobe Printer "Print to Adobe PDF" with custom settings to my HD - it comes up with the following error:
%%[ ProductName: Distiller ]%%
%%[ Error: undefined; OffendingCommand: fix ]%%
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%

I've googled, followed suggestions I've found like change the user prep file, etc - I even uninstalled FH, installed different versions, still no luck, any help would be highly appreciated - also have thousands of files on FH that I currently need.

I'm absolutely no expert here, but have you tried running FH (&/or the Adobe software) in XP compatibility mode? I dont know can you even do that with a printer driver, but if the setup worked in XP it would seem to be worth a try.

I use PDFcreator. Works great and it's free.

This applies to Vista 64bit 32bit and Windows 7 64bit and 32 bit - I will perhaps detail a separate post about this.

The only problem I have in Windows with Freehand that does not make it work perfectly is this print error.

I solved this myself years ago but have only just seen this site and forum.

In your print dialogue, you need to click Advanced.

When in this window opens you will see 3rd down on the left the option for a UserPrep file.

Find where these files are located by searching for one of them.

Duplicate one of them, give it your own name and open it up.

Delete everything in it that is not commented out - remove the actual code.

Save this new file.

Then in Freehand you can choose your .PRP file.

Printing will work perfectly now :)

UserPrep file should look like this...

% Begin UserPrep file.
% File : yourname.prp
% FreeHand 7 UserPrep file.
% Version 1.0 Nov. 25, 1994
% Copyright (C) Macromedia Inc. 1995, 1996 All rights reserved.

% End UserPrep
